Un moment d’une femme

“Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only.

Fashion is in the sky,

in the street,

fashion has to do with ideas,

the way we live, what is happening.”

“Fashion is architecture: it is a matter of proportions.”

— Coco Chanel

CHANEL NEXUS HALL in Ginza embodies the brand spirit through concerts and exhibitions at their 4th floor space, where music, arts and photography are introduced to elaborate the vision behind the design. From the 17th of January to the 18th of February, the exhibition “Un moment d’une femme” by the renowned photographer Frank Horvat presents the first full-scale solo exhibition of his work in Japan with a particularly focus on ‘women’ as the main subject of the selected photographies from his early journalistic works to private projects that he has taken during traveling overseas.

Frank Horvat (Opatija, Croatia,1928) presently lives and works in France. His photographic opus covers various fields, including photojournalism, nature, landscape, portraiture and sculpture, yet, the best known of his works is the fashion photography of the mid 1950s and the late 1980s where the fashion industry had been flourishing and developed many classic iconic styles. In “Un moment d’une femme”, his captures take us traveling back in time to the classic era, the subjects in the black and white images are lively like as if the photos have just been taken yesterday. These photos are a projection of the classic, yet with an aura as vivid as present.

The site has been divided with black walls under soft dim lights that highlight the images in the dark and create geometric shadows through the windows of various rectangular forms on the walls. The shadows are spread and interlaced irregularly on the floor resemble the iconic pattern of tweed. The space has then turned into a world of maze, the view of photography appears differently by different viewing directions or through the rectangular windows of the walls surrounded by; a maze that invites oneself to immerse into the conceptual world of CHANEL.
